Webinar Description:

How can we foster equitable redevelopment while addressing the risks of displacement and gentrification? Join us for an engaging webinar on the Brownfields Revitalization Anti-Displacement Strategies (BRADS) Program, a pioneering initiative designed to empower communities in mitigating displacement risks during land reuse projects.

The BRADS Program emphasizes the importance of local data and community-led efforts to minimize displacement and gentrification during and after land reuse projects. BRADS provides communities with essential resources, guidance, and consultations to understand the markers of gentrification and how to navigate them. This event is presented in collaboration with University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Florida State University, and the Center for Creative Land Recycling (CCLR). These organizations are ready to support your land reuse projects and help build capacity for anti-displacement work. Join us to dive into the data and explore BRADS to address displacement risks and foster equity in brownfields projects.

This webinar is designed for community leaders, environmental professionals, redevelopment planners, and anyone involved in land reuse projects who seeks to address displacement risks and promote equitable redevelopment.

This webinar will explore:

– What is BRADS, and why is it important? Learn about the program’s innovative approach to addressing displacement risks and how it differs from traditional Technical Assistance to Brownfields (TAB) providers.

– The significance of studying displacement and gentrification. Discover why understanding these issues is essential to creating equitable, sustainable redevelopment plans.

– Case studies in action. Explore real-world examples of how BRADS has supported communities in addressing displacement risks and achieving long-term success in land reuse projects.

Preserving Communities: Brownfield Redevelopment to Minimize Displacement & Uplift Legacy Residents

Date: Thursday, December 12th, 2024

Webinar Description:

Brownfields redevelopment can bring social, economic, and public health benefits to overburdened communities experiencing historic disinvestment. At the same time, rising rents and property values from redevelopment can displace legacy residents.

In this panel, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-funded Brownfields Revitalization Anti-Displacement Strategies (BRADS) program will discuss what resources and tools are available to help local governments and community leaders minimize gentrification and displacement when redeveloping brownfield sites. BRADS will present a series of brownfields case studies on gentrification patterns of the past and showcase tools to identify relevant anti-displacement policies.

Then, the panel will highlight stories of anti-displacement and community uplift in action. Gail Montplaisir of the Taurus Development Group will talk about Salina 1st, a $15 million investment in mixed-use community development in the South Salina Street Gateway Corridor in Syracuse, NY. Syracuse’s first minority-led community development, the project will combine mixed income residential and retail space with a full-service incubator for workforce development, training, entrepreneurial support, and scaling service.

Alexander McClean of the City of East Orange will talk about his past experiences, including relevant projects in Jersey City, New Jersey and how the city is combating displacement.
